Graduating high school students across the nation are faced with deciding whether to continue their education or enter the workforce. Many seek higher education in order to improve career opportunities and gain economic prosperity and social mobility (Blackwell & Pinder, 2014). The College Board claims that the average annual income for individuals who have a baccalaureate degree is $53,976. The unemployment rate among these graduates is 4.7 percent, which is lower than the U.S. unemployment rate of 6.7 percent (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). While these statistics look promising, the...

Students of color, males in particular, face significant challenges in higher education. African American male students, on average, are less successful than other racial/ethnic groups, including African American women. Compared to Asian/Pacific Islander or White/Non-Hispanic students, they are less likely to succeed in both developmental and college-level coursework and are more likely to drop out. Latino students are the least likely of all racial/ethnic groups to transfer. African American students and Latino males have the lowest persistence rates (Elgin Community College, 2010).

As a community college scholar and consultant, I have long been distressed by the lack of any significant discussion about the origins and historic and contemporary contributions of Democracy’s Colleges in major texts on the history of American higher education. Historians, it seems, have preferred to focus their gaze on the most prestigious institutions in our country—the Ivys, flagship research universities, some liberal arts standouts—while the workhorses of the system have been grossly underrepresented in the texts. The Shaping of American Higher Education: Emergence and Growth of the...

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) offers academic support for all students in JCCC courses, including concurrent enrollment, as well as study spaces and a café. Located in a newly remodeled space in the library building since summer 2020 as part of the Facilities...
Foothill-De Anza Community College District: A Creative Approach to Increasing Access to Internships
Tags:
In 2019, Foothill College Workforce Development nurtured an idea: What if we could remove one of the biggest barriers students face when entering the workforce with a low-stakes opportunity to gain experience and an internship? Students want to work, but industry professionals want to hire those who already have experience. The flip side of this scenario is that companies won’t hire those without experience and students can’t gain experience if no one will hire them. Our goal became providing students with work experience and an opportunity to explore career opportunities that they wouldn't...

The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) enrolls nearly 140,000 students annually at 10 independently accredited colleges and 31 satellite locations. MCCCD is the top provider of undergraduate education to students of color in the state of Arizona, and 48 percent of its students are first-generation college matriculants (Maricopa Community Colleges, 2024). The district offers degrees and certificates across more than 600 programs, including new bachelor’s degrees in certain fields.
MCCCD, like every institution of higher education, has been buffeted by political, social,...
