Forums

*Session Topic Areas (Please see descriptions.)

  • Organizational Culture
  • Learning Environments
  • Learning Outcomes and Assessment
  • Student Engagement
  • Inquiry and Accountability

*Presentation Title
The title should include no more than 10 words, should catch the attention of Summit participants, and should accurately describe your session.

*Forum Description
The description (50 to 75 words) will be used in the Summit program and should succinctly, persuasively, and accurately tell Summit participants what to expect from the session. The description should help participants determine the scope and level of the session and its appropriateness to their needs. Session descriptions should answer the following questions:

  • What is the intended learning outcome of the session (what will participants learn)?
  • Who will this session particularly benefit?
  • What format will be used (e.g., formal presentation, general discussion, active learning, hands-on involvement)?

Example: Integrating Learning Outcomes Into the College Culture: The Butler Journey. In Spring 2007, Butler Community College began what can be seen as the third major stage in its journey to fully integrate the implementation of learning-outcomes-based instruction into its college culture. The three stages have been (1) faculty and staff generation of the Learning PACT outcomes; (2) integration of those foundational outcomes across the curriculum through course outline design; and (3) revision and alignment of the PACT outcomes with general education and degree requirements. This session will present the story of this journey and help participants relate the progress made and the lessons learned by Butler to their own institution’s goals and purposes.

Example: Catch Them While You Can! Why do so many students show up at our doors, yet drop out before they’ve barely begun? We’ll take a first look at what it takes to engage entering students through the quantitative findings of the new Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) and the qualitative findings from MetLife Foundation Starting Right initiative. Through data and the student stories behind the data, we’ll gain insight into what drives students away and what we can do to help them stay. This session will be highly interactive and will include video clips from student focus groups.

*Forum Plan
In 250 to 500 words, provide a brief description or summary of the topic, initiative, program, or practice that will be the focus of the forum, including evidence of, or a plan to evaluate, its effectiveness. If your proposal is accepted, this information will be included in the Summit program to assist participants in selecting sessions to attend.
