SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS
Project Summary
The project builds upon and transforms an existing engineering technologies tech prep pathway established in 1993 by the Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium. The existing pathway commences at grade eleven and culminates in either an AS degree in Engineering Science or an AAS degree with a major in one of sixteen Engineering and Industrial Technologies Division programs at Sinclair Community College. All degree programs have either dual enrollment or articulation agreements through baccalaureate degrees at a variety of four-year institutions. During the 2003-04 school year, eleven Miami Valley area high schools and career centers offered the pathway in cooperation with their college partner, Sinclair Community College. Five of the sites were selected and are participating in the CCTI project, although all eleven sites benefit from the project deliverables.
The principal deliverables, during the first full year of the CCTI project, include: (1) a revised and expanded course of study and related articulation agreement for the new Tech Prep Engineering Technologies Cluster state model, (2) piloting of dual/concurrent credit in 100-level college math, (3) formation and training of contextual integrated academic leadership teams, consisting of the math, science, English and technical teacher in each of the participating high schools and subsequent expansion of those teams to include representation by post-secondary faculty, (4) on-campus student recruitment and orientation events, and (5) placement of both academic and technical educators in a three-week summer externship in business and industry.
The CCTI project, including the evaluation and assessment design, is serving as a research and development effort and will be adapted on a wider basis throughout the Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium service area to include seven additional pathways serving students in fifty-eight public school districts in a seven county area in southwest Ohio.
