Stopped-Out Students: Delivering on the Unfulfilled Promise of Higher Education
Christina Hubbard, Senior Director of Community College Strategic Research, EAB
Community college enrollment is now 9 percent lower than it was back in 2006 and will bear the brunt of anticipated industrywide enrollment declines. Yet, we have a huge source of prospective students that is often overlooked in most enrollment strategies. According to National Student Clearinghouse, 36 million people in the United States have some college and no degree. That number has increased by 6.6 million in the past five years. Currently, only 3 percent of students with some college return to school, although 50 percent of students say they would return if it was more convenient or financially feasible. Institutions that remove obstacles to readmission and address learners’ needs can reach this population and meaningfully move the dial on degree attainment. How do we demonstrate to students we have failed in the past that our colleges are better equipped to help them fulfill their goals today? Participants will leave with background research on why this topic matters today and have specific strategies from colleges around the country that they can deploy on campus to find their former students, recruit them back, and support them to graduation.
