A Big Laugh: Effectively Using Humor in the Classroom or the Boardroom

Did you know?

Research shows humor can be used effectively as a strategy to increase involvement and attention, as well as to painlessly disengage people from potentially confrontational situations. A sense of humor can contribute to positively managing a classroom or boardroom by promoting relaxation and creating a comfortable social environment. Humor has also been shown to reduce tension and produce positive physiological benefits.

Using humor, your speaker demonstrates how to

  • Use humor in a style that is comfortable for you,
  • Use humor to defuse tension,
  • Tie humor to your content and goals, and
  • Use humor to neutralize the “know-it-all” in the room.

The facilitator for this humorous strategic planning session is a journalist, author, and adjunct professor, and has owned an award-winning public relations business since 1988. She has also performed stand up comedy at places like the Laugh Factory in Hollywood and appeared in the final episode of Seinfeld. She is a Chamber of Commerce past president and has been asked to speak at a Senate-sponsored business conference, as well as for the United States Army. She is a frequent guest lecturer for continuing education departments at community colleges and universities, and her online class is offered at more than 1,000 facilities worldwide, including Harvard Adult Education. The inspiration she gives to others has even been compared to Oprah!
